We love building decks, but this job had us bounding out of bed in the morning. Constructed between two beech trees, a large platform supported a two storey house, complete with glazing, covered balcony, and loft. To say nothing of the fitted steps and the scramble net.

This is far too good for the kids, which is a pity because we can’t keep them off it.

Decks are often added to newly purchased properties. This was built over an existing patio, raising the level to that of the door threshold, for comfortable movement in and out of the house. A swimming pool needed fencing off to create a safe environment for two young children, being in the same style as the deck railings made for a seamless transition.
Part of the balustrade railing was in toughened glass paneling, for an even classier finish.

A fantastic view from this garden was being wasted hidden behind a high fence. The area was largely unusable due to it’s steep slope.

Timberscapes designed this single level, L shaped deck to maximise the garden and open up the view.

After careful negotiations between Timberscapes and the Local Planning Authority, consent was given, on condition that we were especially considerate of the resident Great Created Newt colony!

Deck and studio

What started as a simple deck enquiry just grew and grew, but why take our word for it when the customer is so much more eloquent?

Jack Sutcliffe and I stood in the rain and talked decking, and here I am now with a beautifully constructed deck, solid and neatly framed round the edges. We talked further, and a bench appeared to stand in front of my greenhouse, in exactly the style I wanted – although the sloping back, on Jack’s insistence, was definitely an improvement on the bench I had seen.

A few more photographs and discussion later, and the most beautiful Japanese-style fence appeared, along with a railing on which to lean, which I know cost some thought. I spend many happy times leaning on it, too – it’s exactly the right height. As time went on, I began to look for things for Jack to copy, and now the garden has some very unusual arches, a bench in the corner with trellis round it, and pathways in each garden room. It is a real treat to walk round the garden now, and I look forward to warmer weather to improve the planting.

The furniture in my studio has been expertly made, the product of more pictures and discussions. The furniture appeared, each piece perfectly realised, with little touches I would never have thought of but which matched the style I wanted perfectly. All in different kinds of oak, each piece complements the other, all equally functional and beautiful. It is a joy to go into the studio.

Then there’s the largest shed in Yorkshire! Matched exactly to the studio, with a shingle roof and larch cladding, it’s the perfect place to store everything while being completely in harmony with everything else in the garden.

I was extremely fortunate to find someone who could do so much, so well, and do it all cheerfully and on time. My garden was a half-formed idea; now it’s a place where I go each morning and evening to potter and enjoy the little paradise it has become.

Pergola deck

Just because its a small area, doesn’t mean a deck can’t be packed with features. A corner of a suburban garden needed a special something, Our speciality, quarter cartwheel pergola, with built in seating, balustrade railing, and deck boarding laid at a 45 degrees angle.

We’ve always been pleased with the work Timberscapes has done for us.

This deck was designed by Tracy Foster, an award winning garden designer (Best Small Garden, Gold Medal at BBC Gardener’s World Live)

After an extension to the house, the back patio needed re designing, working in collaboration with customer and garden designer, Timberscapes created this dramatic deck, including large areas for seating and two distinctive staircases, to lead into other features of the garden.

I am very impressed with the quality of the timber and we love the stairs.

Steeply sloping gardens can result in large areas of land being practically unusable. Traditional forms of hard landscaping such as slabbed patios are impractical to build due to the massive quantity of fill required. That’s when decking really comes into its own. Comparitively inexpensive, and much warmer and inviting than stone, a deck was the perfect solution.

In my professional capacity as an architect, I have dealt with numerous contractors over the years and I can honestly say I would have no hesitations in recomending Timberscapes to friends, family and any commercial clients who may require a deck constructing.

Two tier ground level deck

An ugly concrete slabbed patio was spoiling this property with its newly built conservatory – something had to be done.

Maximising the space, whilst creating an interesting pattern in the deck board layout, to cover the existing split levels produced this artisan result.

Very accurate and professional service. Highly recommended.

Hillside Deck

A focal point was needed for this large Vitorian house, with an even larger garden.

A triple deck with multiple flights of steps dramatically altered the look and usefulness of the steeply sloping back garden. Octagonal decks and a gazebo with bar, a mixture of timber and rope balustrade, and a lighting system to rival Blackpool illuminations (but with an aweful lot more class!).
Let me tell you about the bar! Two inch thick, natural edged, solid Elm bar top with matching overlapped boarding underneath. A cast iron style foot rest, 6 matching solid elm stools. What a joy to create!

Everyone is impressed by the decking, but the bar always takes their breath away. We’ve used the decking throughout the winter, can’t wait for summer.

The challenge

A wonderful house and garden was being spoilt by the presence of a very badly constructed, down right dangerous timber deck.

TimberScapes solution

To rip out every remnant of the previous deck and build a proper one instead! The replacement was designed on two levels, ground and elevated, with part of the raised deck constructed to accommodate a hot tub. Elevated decks where the decking extends beyond the support posts are called cantilevered. They require experts to construct them and look stunning when done properly.

Thank goodness that old deck is gone; you took your life in your hands every time you walked on it. Having had a TimberScapes timber deck fitted at our previous house we knew how much better it could be. This deck is so vastly superior in both build and design. We’re really glad we postponed our new kitchen to get the deck done first. Our mother is very envious, we told her to get TimberScapes to do a deck for her but she asked a general builder to do it instead and now she can see her mistake
